Strike!

We just saw on the TV that the lights on Broadway are scheduled to go dark at 11am this morning as the Stagehands go on strike. So that cancels Avenue Q for us, but in a quirk of Broadway management and staffing, Young Frankenstein is not affected by the strike, so the show will go on! Whew...

Magnolia Bakery

Magnolia Bakery

Yesterday, we made our way to Bleecker Street and the famous Magnolia Bakery, where they produce what are apparently the world's best, and certainly most famous, cupcakes. It was a madhouse, with people lined up to purchase the cupcakes, which are constantly replenished by the staff. And they were good. Very good.

nightlife

A word about our exciting nightlife here in the city. Thursday night was our wild night, leaving Rent and returning to our room by 11pm, exhausted by our day of travel and running around the city. Friday night, ready to really tear it up, we were back in our room and in bed by 9. And that seemed soooo late. Tonight, anything could happen...nightclubs, parties till dawn, watching the sun come up as we stagger out into the street from some crazy experience. As they say in the UK, not bloody likely....

Issac Mizrahi

Yesterday, we had the tour of Issac Mizrahi's studio, arranged by our generous friend Veronica Webb who has modeled for him for years and is a close friend. It was an amazing tour. Colleen knew his Spring 08 line and was able to recognize the "Tiffany Box" dress being sewn by one of his couture garment staff. They were quite impressed by Colleen, I must say. We saw the large area where his television show was filmed, the pattern makers area, and were able to look through the dresses from past collections in a private room where select customers are invited for fittings. Most interesting to me was the room we were allowed in where they were working on his new Target line. No photos allowed, but the walls were filled with prints and scraps and ideas for inspiration. You could see all the influences they were drawing upon for the upcoming line. It looked exactly like I imagined it would...a great thanks to Veronica for her amazingly generous arrangement of this special tour.
Today is our last full day, and we have a lot we would like to do. We are going to see Avenue Q at 2, then Young Frankenstein tonight. We have to return to Tiffany's late this afternoon to pick up a necklace for Colleen's mother, and a return trip to the Apple Store and Louis Vuitton. We have MOMA to see and would love to find the time for a quick Central Park walk. A lot to accomplish in one day...

Bigger City

It seems a much bigger city than the last time I was here, but also much friendlier. The amount of people is staggering. Interestingly, I think we both have lost the real desire to live here. On prior trips, we talked about what it would be like, how we would do it, what we would do...this time we both are in a much different place. Maybe it is too many years in Key West, or our age, or the staggering amounts of pure money that it would obviously take. Maybe it is being happier with where we are. It might simply be our age. Whatever the reason, it is different this trip. It is a more comfortable place, feeling like we aren't missing out as much as in the past.

Today set - 40 degrees

on to the Today Show

it is cold.

We arrived yesterday around 1pm, and although we knew it was going to be cold, it is always a shock to feel the air for the first time.

We went to Rent last night after eating at Tom Colicchio's Craft Bar, which was fantastic. The waiter brought us several things off the menu that we didn't order, just because he thought we should give them a try. Rent was as good as we could have hoped, probably better. Everything we hoped for and more.

This morning, in the city that never sleeps, I couldn't find an open coffee shop, wandered to a small store that sold me a cup of bad coffee, then I got momentarily lost on my way back to the hotel and in the cold dry air a contact lens popped out of my left eye. So at 5:30 am, on 42nd Street, I am freezing, holding a bad cup of coffee, and bending down looking for a contact lens, hoping I don't look like too much of an easy mark with my laptop and iPhone there for the taking. So much for my tough big-city gangsta persona. I was just another soft helpless, one-eyed tourist.
